The rivers, few as there are, provide the only farming. Less than 18% of Afghanistan has land suitable for agriculture.

You can see the stark differences between the wealthier land owners and the remote villages.

This valley is very close to me and is one of the most productive apple and apricot areas in Afghanistan.
